Culture identify
As per diverse physical environment ethnicity of Nepalese society, customs and tradition are very many and extremely varied. As you probably know Kumari puja is distinctly a newari observation as magi is that of Tharus Rais’ Undhauli and Unbhauli, Gurung’ Rodi, Tamang’s Lhosar, Terai peoples chat, Gaura parva in far-west Nepal and Bisket jatra in Bhaktapur along with many others are special for specific communities or geographical areas. Actually Nepal has one of the richest culture variations in the world. A tourist to Nepal remarked that walking across the streets of Kathmandu is like exploring a living museum. As mentioned in the previous lessons, the culture diversities of Nepal are our valuable assests.
National Flag
Our national flag has two triangles joined together. The base is crimson and the boarder deep blue. The upper triangle has the imprint of the white moon with eight rays the lower triangle the imprint of the sun with twelve rays. The moon and the sun signify that Nepal will exists till the moon and the sun exist in the universe.
Our
national flag is unique in the world. It reflects our culture, religion,
history and bravery. The crimson color represents the bravery of the Nepalis soldiers. The blue color signifies peace and friendship. We should keep up the
glory of our national flag and safeguard the freedom and sovereignty of our
motherland. National
Anthem
we have a new national anthem now. It was introduced after the peoples movement of 2063 B.S The national anthem elevates the character and glory of the country and at the same time it teaches the citizens their duty and responsibility towards the nation. All formal national festivals,
ceremonies and programmers of honors begin with the national anthem. Therefore when our national anthem is sung, we should stand up in a disciplined way to show our respect to it. Our national anthem is as follows:
Janaki Temple
Pashupatinath Pashupatinath is probably the holiest place in Nepal for Hindus. It is situated in the ea
st of Kathmandu on the bank of holy Bagmati river. There are many temples in addition to the main temple of pashupatinath. The pashupatinath temple is built in the pagoda style with golden roof. There are one thousand shivalingas. There is also a cremation ghat (aryaghat) in the area. The pashupatinath area includes Bankali, Guheshwari, Jaybageshwari, the sleshmantak forest and devpatan. The site was included in the UNESCO world heritage site in 1979 AD.
Mt. Everest
Mt. Everest is one of the major identities of Nepal. It is the highest peak in the world. It is 8848 m high from the sea level. In terms of latitude and longitude Mt. Everest is at 27.98 N and 86.92 E respectively . It is the main attraction of the sagarmatha National park, which has been a world Heritage site since 1979 AD.
Mt.Everest is called sagarmatha, ‘forehead in the sky’ in nepali and chomo Lungma holy-mother in Tibetan. Its nepali name was given after British surveyor sir George Everest. Earlier the mountain was known as peak XV.
Many people try to climb and reach the highest point of the world. The first successful attempt was made on 29 may, 1953 jointly by new Zealander Edmund Hilary and nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Since then more than 5000 people have reached the worlds highest summit. Mt everest is also called the third pole. It is pride of Nepal.
